I, Sara Beth Smith, received the LaVelle Smith Scholarship for the academic school year 2004-2005, and the Dave Shepard Scholarship for the current school year 2003-2004. After attending Franklin High School, I entered Tennessee Technological University in the fall of 2001, aspiring to become a geologist. After taking my first mineralogy course, I discovered the specific branch of geology I was interested in. This semester I am furthering my mineralogical knowledge in optical mineralogy, complemented by a course in SEM, scanning electron microscopy. My plans are to hopefully attend graduate school at Virginia Tech in the fall of 2006. Peripheral to school, I am a lab teaching assistant and currently president of the TTU Geo Club. Other than school, my hobbies include camping and hiking with friends and family, and also playing bluegrass music as often as possible.
